Tarot Portraits

Photographs made after tarot readings with students from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, France. With its origins in 15th-century Italy, where it began as a card game, the tarot tradition has since evolved into a proteiform tool for divination and introspection. These images, which center on the querent’s gaze rather than the cards themselves, consider how perception, attention, and memory interact when a photographic system is introduced into a ritual of exchange and contemplation.
